{"id":124,"date":"2013-10-30T14:00:32","date_gmt":"2013-10-30T13:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brokenwings.nl\/?p=124"},"modified":"2014-03-07T19:52:45","modified_gmt":"2014-03-07T18:52:45","slug":"stichting-broken-wings-in-a-nutshell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.brokenwings.nl\/?p=124","title":{"rendered":"Stichting Broken Wings in a nutshell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Stichting Broken Wings in a nutshell<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>On April 17th, 1995 the village of Vaassen celebrated, the fiftieth anniversary of the victory over German\u00a0tiranny during World War II, in the presence of Mr Roger Jean Marie, surviving Canadian liberator in 1945 and family members of the aircrew, buried in Vaassen.<br \/>\nOn this occasion special attention was paid to the heroic role of the deadly injuried crewmembers (buried in Vaassen) of the two airplanes which crashed near Vaassen. \u2028\u2028The sacrifice of those young men: their lives in exchange for our freedom was extensively emphasized during an impressive Remembrance Service held in the presence of the families closely related to the airmen. \u2028\u2028Later on, at the initiative of some inhabitants of the village of Vaassen, Stichting \u2018Broken Wings\u2019 was founded on November 28th, 1997, in order to meet the wishes of most of the families <b>to honour the memory of these young airmen not only this time but also in the years to come.\u00a0\u2028\u2028<\/b><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_59\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.brokenwings.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Historie_Engelse-gasten-in-vaassen-1995.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59\" class=\"size-full wp-image-59\" alt=\"Engelse Gasten\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.brokenwings.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Historie_Engelse-gasten-in-vaassen-1995.jpg?resize=640%2C427&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.brokenwings.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Historie_Engelse-gasten-in-vaassen-1995.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.brokenwings.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Historie_Engelse-gasten-in-vaassen-1995.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.brokenwings.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Historie_Engelse-gasten-in-vaassen-1995.jpg?resize=200%2C133&amp;ssl=1 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-59\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Engelse Gasten in Vaassen (1995)<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>\u00a0<b>Our aim<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Stichting Broken Wings intends to achieve their aim by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>organizing memorial services<\/b> and activities to honour the crewmembers killed in action when their planes chrashed near Vaassen during World War II;<\/li>\n<li><b>keeping in conta<\/b>ct with survivors and relatives of the victims;<\/li>\n<li><b>paying attention<\/b> to those who devoted themselves at that time to help allied airmen to escape while risking their own lives;<\/li>\n<li><b>developing educational programs<\/b> especially for children and youngsters in Vaassen &amp; environment, involving them energetically in the Remembrance Services and by increasing their knowledge re that part of Vaassen history in World War II;<\/li>\n<li><b>collecting historical objects, documents &amp; publications<\/b> concerning World War II.\u00a0\u2028\u2028\u2028<i>Memorial service at wargraves in Vaassen<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Activities<\/b><\/h2>\n<h2><b>Meetingpoint for relatives and survivors \u2028<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>During the past five years \u2018Broken Wings\u2019 succeeded in tracing relatives of the crew-members. When visiting Vaassen relatives and survivors can rely on hospitality during their stay and assistance in finding places and sites which might be of interest to them.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2028\u2028Air-Gunners Day<\/h3>\n<p>Every year in April a Remembrance Service at the small monument in the woods near Gortel commemorating the 6 crew-members of the Short Stirling \u2019T for Tommy\u2019crashed here on 16\/12\/1942 . The crew was buried at the Cemetery in Epe (Tongerenseweg) where these airmen \u2028<\/p>\n<h3><b>Poppy-Day <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>\u2028<\/b>\u2028On November 11th, 1918 at 11h00 World War I ended officially. \u2028On this day, Armistice Day (Remembrance Sunday or Poppy Day) Great Britain and the British Commonwealth still commemorates all \u2028\u2028the servicemen and women who died in the two World Wars.The Poppy became a symbol. Every year on the Saturday closest to November 11th, a Remembrance Service for the 12 airmen is performed by \u2018Broken Wings\u2019 on the Vaassen Cemetery.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Educational Program \u2028<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>At the initiative of \u2018Broken Wings\u2019 a lesson package was composed for primary schools in Vaassen in order to make a significant contribution to the process of consciousness of the youth: there is no victory to gain from any war.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2028\u2028<b>Remembrance Column Project \u2028<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>During World War II aswell as afterwards many people paid attention and took care for the victims, relatives and survivors of the airbattle near Vaassen. \u2028In commemoration of these men and women \u2018Broken Wings\u2019 started a project which hold the placing of a remembrance column at the Vaassen Cemetery opposite the war graves \u2028and dedicated to a special person. The first column was unveiled on November 9th, 2002 in commemoration of Mrs Riekie Mulder ten Kate.<\/p>\n<h3>Collection of objects &amp; documents<b> \u2028<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Another aspect of the \u2018Broken Wings\u2019 activities is collecting historical objects a.o. accessories of airplanes, personal properties, photographs, books, documents and publi-cations. Exhibitions are being performed several times a year. Eye-witness\u2019s accounts are recorded by means of interviews. \u2028Thus \u2018Broken Wings\u2019 tries to make a start with a valuable collection for future gene-rations.<\/p>\n<h3><b>News Letter<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b> \u2028<\/b>\u2028In 2002 \u2018Broken Wings\u2019 started on a more or less regular basis the publication of a News Letter to keep in contact with survivors and relatives overseas aswell as with those interested in the activities of \u2018Broken Wings\u2019 in The Netherlands.\u00a0\u2028You can order a English Newsletter by mail.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><b>Finances and Support<\/b><\/h1>\n<p>As a non-profit organization \u2018Broken Wings\u2019 is fully dependent on donations from the private sector. Required finances are coming from donations of local and regional organizations.
