Op zaterdag 11 april 2026 om 14.00 uur <\/strong>vindt de jaarlijkse herdenking plaats bij het<\/span><\/p>

T for Tommy monument aan het Veenwegje te Gortel ter nagedachtenis aan de bemanning van de Short Stirling R 9168, die hier op 16 december 1942 neerstortte.<\/span><\/p>

Van de zeven bemanningsleden, Air Gunners uit Canada, Nieuw Zeeland en Engeland, sneuvelden 6 vliegers. Zij werden begraven op de Oude Begraafplaats, Tongerenseweg, Epe.<\/span><\/p>

Stichting Broken Wings, die deze herdenking organiseert in samenwerking met Vereniging Gortel-Niersen, wil niet alleen stilstaan bij het offer dat de zes gesneuvelde geallieerde vliegers destijds brachten voor onze vrijheid maar vooral ook benadrukken wat de oorlog in Oekra\u00efne ons inmiddels heeft duidelijk gemaakt nl. dat vrede, vrijheid en veiligheid in Nederland en Europa niet langer beschouwd kunnen worden als vanzelfsprekende verworvenheden, maar als kostbare waarden die actief verdedigd moeten worden.<\/span><\/p>

De opmars van The Seaforth Highlanders of Holland Memorial Pipes & Drums vanaf de Gortelseweg naar het monument alsook hun muzikale medewerking samen met het Vaassens Fanfare Corps geven elk jaar weer een bijzonder karakter aan de plechtige ceremonie.<\/span><\/p>
