Dinsdagavond 26 april \u00a0vertelde Broken Wings voorzitter Adrie Pol in de bibliotheek in Epe over de dramatische crash van een Amerikaanse bommenwerper bij Epe. Door het informele begin van de lezing brak meteen het ijs en kwamen de eerste vragen en opmerkingen al uit het publiek.<\/p>\n

Dit drama speelde zich af ruim 78 jaar geleden . Het toestel vloog, nadat het beschoten was, onmiddellijk in brand. De reddingswerkers die snel ter plaatse waren probeerden uit alle macht een weg door de romp probeerden te hakken en dat slechts een vlieger de crash overleefde.<\/p>\n

Bemanning van de Bioya B17<\/p><\/div>\n

De negen gesneuvelde Amerikanen werden op 14 en 20 januari 1944 begraven op de Algemene Begraafplaats aan de Tongerenseweg in Epe. Twee van hen zijn later herbegraven op het Amerikaanse ereveld in het Limburgse Margraten, de andere zeven vliegers zijn teruggebracht naar de Verenigde Staten. De vlieger die de crash overleefde keerde na gevangenschap in Duitsland na de oorlog terug naar Texas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
